6 class hours.

Stop feeling like all the King’s horses and all the King’s men, and learn how to put sweater pieces together! This class covers all the basic skills for putting together and finishing a sweater. You will learn about the structure of fabric, purpose of selvage stitches, and how paired decreases are placed at underarm, neckline, and along sleeves. You will use homework squares that represent important areas of a sweater to join shoulder stitches (3-needle bind-off and invisible stitch-to-stitch seaming), sew side seams (mattress stitch), set in a simple shoulder (stitch-to-row seaming), and add bands and necklines (pick up stitches along an edge). Leave class with the confidence to take the pieces of that garment and finish it!

Know Before You Show Cast on, knit, purl, bind off, at least one decrease, and an understanding of simple pattern instructions and stitch abbreviations.

  • Yarn needle with blunt tip

Homework

There are six swatches (three pairs) that simulate various parts of a sweater. To make it easier to tell the swatches apart, you may choose to use different colors for the swatches of each pair: for example, A, P, and Y in color A and B, Q, and Z in color B.

Squares A and B Cast on 20 stitches. Beginning with a knit row, work in stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) for 24 rows. Bind off.

Square P (shoulder) Cast on 20 stitches. Beginning with a knit row, work in stockinette stitch for 24 rows. On next right side (knit) row, bind off 8 stitches, work to end of row. Purl 1 row. Bind off 6 stitches, work to end of row. Purl 1 row. Bind off remaining 6 stitches.

Square Q (shoulder) Cast on 20 stitches. Beginning with a knit row, work in stockinette stitch for 23 rows. On next wrong side (purl) row, bind off 8 stitches, work to end of row. Knit 1 row. Bind off 6 stitches, work to end of row. Knit 1 row. Bind off remaining 6 stitches.

Square Z (neckline) Cast on 20 stitches. Beginning with a knit row, work in stockinette stitch for 25 rows. Leaving a 6-8˝ tail, place stitches on a holder.

Square Y (neckline) Cast on 20 stitches. Beginning with a knit row, work in stockinette stitch for 24 rows. Leave stitches on needle with yarn attached.

Steam block your swatches.
